No people to live sans food, home: PM Sheikh Hasina https://english.gsnews24.com/politics/1368 https://english.gsnews24.com/politics/1368#respond Mon, 04 May 2020 09:53:25 +0000 http://english.gsnews24.com/?p=1368 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said that the utmost goal of her government was to build a country where no people will live without home, die without food and treatment and every person would have the opportunity to have a decent life.

“We will celebrate the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation in 2020 and golden jubilee of our independence in 2021 when Bangladesh will be a country free from hunger and poverty. In 2041 Bangladesh will be a developed nation in South Asia and we are implementing our all plans with this goal,” she said.

The prime minister said this while inaugurating the 4th Unnyana Mela through a videoconferencing from her Gonobhaban residence. Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader were present, BSS reports.

“We want to make such a Bangladesh which will be self-reliant in food, education, intellectuality and all other areas. The ‘Delta Plan-2100’ has been prepared with this goal to take forward the country step by step making the development sustainable,” Sheikh Hasina said.

The videoconferencing was connected with four upazilas of the country while exhibited at 500 venues across the countries including all districts, upazilas headquarters and union digital centers.

Chief coordinator of the Prime Minister’s Office on SDG Affairs Abul Kalam Azad spoke on the occasion and presented a video documentary on Bangladesh’s socioeconomic development in last 10 years and while Principal Secretary Nojibur Rahman conducted the function.

After the inauguration of the Unnayan Mela, the prime minister talked to the officials, local public representatives, beneficiaries of Ekti Bari Ekti Khamar project, persons of different professions, students of Amtali upazila of Barguna district, Fakirhat of Bagerhat district, Lohagara upazial of Narail district and Pirganj of Rangpur district and exchanged views on development of their areas.

The government has been arranging Unnyan Mela for the last four years to showcase the successes of the government in socioeconomic progress of the country and let the people particularly youth folks know and find out income generating occupations for themselves after completing education.

“The fair will inspire the youth to build their own future decently keeping them free from militancy, terrorism and other vices. Then they will be able to do something for themselves and the people of the country,” she said.

The three-day Unnayan Mela (Development Fair) is simultaneously being held on Dhaka Trade Fair (DTF) ground and every district and upazila across the country.

Sheikh Hasina said people of Bangladesh were deprived of having the opportunity of changing their fate for 21 years after the killing of Bangabandhu.

She said military dictators did nothing to take forward the country except making their own fortune.

The Awami League government made the country self-reliant in food production after coming to power in 1996, she said adding that literacy rate and power generation were increased while communication system had been developed across the country at that time which was the ‘golden era’ for Bangladesh.

But the pace of development was disrupted as Awami League could not come to power in 2001 elections, she said.

SC upholds HC bail of Khaleda Zia https://english.gsnews24.com/politics/1357 https://english.gsnews24.com/politics/1357#respond Fri, 01 May 2020 05:27:07 +0000 http://english.gsnews24.com/?p=1357 The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday upheld six-month bail granted to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia by the High Court in two defamation cases filed against her in Narail and Dhaka over her ‘derogatory remarks’ about freedom fighters and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, reports UNB.

A three-member Appellate Division bench, led by chief justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order rejecting petitions filed seeking stay on the bail orders.

Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali stood for Khaleda while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam for the state.

The High Court granted a six-month bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in defamation cases filed against her in Narail and Dhaka on 13 and 14 August respectively.

On 21 December 2015, Khaleda Zia at a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh here raised a question about the actual number of Liberation War martyrs saying, “There are controversies over how many were martyred in the Liberation War. There’re many books and documents on the controversies.”

Reacting to Khaleda’s remarks, Raihan Farooque Imam of Naragati in Narail filed the case with the Cognisance Court on 24 December 2015.

On 5 January 2016, AB Siddiqui, president of Jananetri Parishad, filed the case with Dhaka’s chief metropolitan magistrate court.

Atmosphere is fine enough for election in Bangladesh, says PM Sheikh Hasina https://english.gsnews24.com/politics/1354 https://english.gsnews24.com/politics/1354#respond Fri, 01 May 2020 04:36:34 +0000 http://english.gsnews24.com/?p=1354 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the atmosphere in Bangladesh is ‘sufficiently fine’ to hold general elections and will remain so during the balloting.

Hasina spoke about a host of issues, including the election, at an interview with the Voice of America in the US before returning home and after attending the annual gathering of the UN.

VoA asked her how she would see the pre-election state of the country, the Election Commission, and whether the playing field were level, if she were in the opposition now.

The Awami League government brought ‘transparency’ to the constitution of the EC through a ‘search committee’ instituted by the president while the previous governments had formed the commission as per their wish, Hasina said.

The people have voted in a festive manner in the around 6,500 elections, including those to the local government bodies, held in the around 10 years of her government, the prime minister said.

“If you look into it, you will have to admit that the atmosphere in the country is certainly fine to hold polls and the Election Commission can conduct that election,” she said.

She cited instances of the recent elections to the Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal city corporations when asked about the level-playing field.

“You saw that our (mayor) candidate had lost the Sylhet city election by a margin of only 2,500 votes. We didn’t interfere even though the margin was so close. Our candidate also accepted the results,” she said.

“Doesn’t it prove that the atmosphere is fine enough for elections?” Hasina asked.

She said the atmosphere would remain the same during the next general election.

“You must keep in mind the goals of my politics, what I have done in power. Have I built my own fortune? My children’s fortune? I’ve built the fortune of my country’s people,” Hasina remarked.

She also claimed to have rolled back the country from the election situation created during the military government.

Speaking about economic development of the country, she said the private sector cannot to do anything alone if the government does not work properly. “The government must create opportunities for the private sector to work and my government has done that,” she said.

She slammed the critics of Bangladesh’s current economic state. “Can you make someone see if he or she wants to act like a blind person even after having eyes? I don’t think so,” she said.

Hasina said the people do not see the things like the critics do. “They are happy.”

“A girl from a village told me that she uses an electric rice cooker now. That’s the change we are bringing. We are taking steps so that the facilities for the citizens can reach the rural areas,” she said about the progress her government made in the power sector.

VoA also asked her whether she was “upset” at the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders’ threat to drive out 4 million people by identifying them as “illegal migrants from Bangladesh”.

“It may be their kind of politics. I don’t think any illegal Bangladesh took shelter there. Our economy is strong enough. Why would they go there to become illegal migrants?” she asked.

“And if some people call their own citizens illegal, it’s their own issue,” she added.

Hasina also said she spoke to her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi over the issue. “He told me that they have no plan to send them (illegal migrants) back,” she said.

She thanked the people of Bangladesh, especially the residents of Cox’s Bazar, and local and international aid agencies for helping the government tackle the Rohingya refugee crisis.

“The entire world stood by Bangladesh,” she said.

About the government’s plan for the Rohingyas, she said the international organisations were working for the safe return of the refugees to the Rakhine State of Myanmar.

“We want to send some of the refugees back to see how they (Myanmar) behave with them. We are also building houses for them at the Bhasan Char (island). They can live there,” she said.

None to be allowed to hold rallies on city streets: Obaidul Quader https://english.gsnews24.com/politics/1337 https://english.gsnews24.com/politics/1337#respond Sun, 29 Mar 2020 11:16:41 +0000 http://english.gsnews24.com/?p=1337 Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday said none will be allowed to hold rallies on city streets, reports BSS.

“We also would not hold any rally on the streets. The prime minister has opened the Suhrawardy Udyan to all. If necessary we will erect an open stage there and set up microphones,” he told a function at the auditorium of National Museum in the city.

Sheikh Russel Children and Adolescents Council organized the function to distribute educational equipment to students marking the 72nd birthday of prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Quader said police are taking necessary preparations to help the BNP holding its rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on Sunday. He asked the party for not making any drama centering the rally.

Quader said the BNP had not been able to wage any movement for 10 minutes in the last 10 years. They have no such strength too. Now, they are dreaming of toppling down the government, which is really ridiculous, he added.

He said, “A vested quarter is hatching conspiracy when the country is moving forward under the dynamic leadership of prime minister Sheikh Hasina… Bangladesh is now a role model of development before the world.”

The AL leader said the world leaders praised the extraordinary leadership of Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina in the United Nations General Assembly.

They (world leaders) also expected a continuation of the present government, he added. Prime minister’s assistant private secretary Saifuzzaman Shekhor, former judge of the Supreme Court Siddiqur Rahman and retired major general AK Md Ali Sikdar, among others, addressed the programme with the council president Md Raqibur Rahman in the chair.

‘We’ve to change the fate of people living in remote areas of the country which was the dream of the Father of the Nation. That is our target. We’re putting in our best efforts to achieve the target,’ she said, reports the UNB.

The Prime Minister said this while inaugurating 33 development projects in 20 districts across the country through videoconferencing from her official residence Ganobhaban.

She opened seven newly constructed bridges, one jetty, Extended Administration Bhabans and Hall Rooms of nine Upazila Parishad Complexes, six newly constructed Nagar Matrisadon (Maternity clinics) Bhabans, and ten Nagar Healthcare Centre.

Sheikh Hasina said the government as per its election manifesto launched the charter of change after returning to power through the 2008 general election. ‘We’ve changed the living standard of people in the last 10 years…we’ve started the journey for change, and we’re moving towards prosperity.’

She mentioned that the aim of the government is to make the country developed and prosperous one with eradicating poverty. ‘We’ve achieved tremendous success to that end.’

The Prime Minister mentioned that the government has taken steps so that people could lead a good life. ‘We’re continuing our efforts for changing the fate of people.’

After assuming power in 1996, she said, the AL government always tried to materialise the dream of the Father of the Nation to bring smile to the faces of people and change their living standard.

She recalled the horrible days the BNP-Jamaat regime from 2001-2006 when there were widespread killings, corruption and militant acts.

In 2008, she said, the people of the country voted Awami League to power again and just after forming the government it took numerous projects for the country’s sustainable development.

‘As a result, Bangladesh gained socioeconomic status and recognition from the world as a developing country,’ she said.

Local Government and Rural Development & Co-operatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain also spoke at the programme.

Later, the Prime Minister talked to cross-section of people of eight districts through the videoconference.

Khaleda Zia admitted to BSMMU https://english.gsnews24.com/politics/1375 https://english.gsnews24.com/politics/1375#respond Sat, 06 Oct 2018 00:35:05 +0000 http://english.gsnews24.com/?p=1375 Online Desk:>>>

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was admitted to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Saturday afternoon after prison authorities shifted her there from old Dhaka Central jail for better treatment in response to a court order.

BSMMU director Brigadier General Md Abdullah-Al-Harun said a 5-member medical board, headed by Prof Md Abdul Jalil Chowdhury, was formed as per the court order.

The doctors of the medical board examined Khaleda’s health and completed necessary formalities for providing treatment to her after she was taken to the hospital, he said.

The medical board will hold a meeting at 1 pm on Sunday to take a decision about her treatment, he added.

Earlier Khaleda was taken to the Cabin Block of the hospital in a blue Pajero jeep around 3:40 pm, said Inspector General of Prison Brigadier General Syed Iftekhar Uddin Ahmed.

She will be kept in a cabin on the 6th floor of the Cabin Block of the hospital. Earlier, the authorities concerned booked room No 612 and 613 for Khaleda Zia.

Four police vehicles escorted her to the hospital while BNP leaders and activists paid respect to their leader standing on both sides of the road.

Earlier, her orthopedic bed was shifted from the central jail to the cabin block around 2:55 pm.

BSMMU director Brigadier General Harun-Ur-Rashid and other physicians were present when the jeep carrying Khaleda reached the hospital gate.

Meanwhile, Jail Superintendent Iqbal Kabir of Keraniganj Central Jail met Khaleda in the morning.

The High Court on Thursday directed the government to immediately admit Khaleda Zia to the BSMMU and form a 5-member medical board afresh for her treatment.

Khaleda Zia was in the erstwhile Dhaka Central Jail at Nazimuddin Road since she was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8.

On September 16, a medical board formed by the government for jailed Khaleda, suggested admitting her to a hospital like BSMMU though they have found ‘no symptom of any serious disease’ in her.

On April 7 last, Khaleda Zia underwent some medical tests at the BSMMU because of her illness.

BNP has been demanding that Khaleda is shifted to United Hospital in the city for her better treatment.

Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres has said the UN is with the government of Sheikh Hasina in full solidarity and cooperation.

‘…the United Nations is with in full solidarity and full cooperation with the government of Sheikh Hasina,’ the Foreign Secretary quoted Antonio Guterres as saying.

The UN Secretary General, however, expressed his hope that the next general election will be fair and the participatory one.

Praising the progress of Bangladesh, he said the development of the country is truly very remarkable and many countries can learn from this.

Guterres highly praised the leadership of the Prime Minister, particularly for her humanitarian stance over Rohingya issue. ‘You (Sheikh Hasina) can be a role model for many other heads of State,’ he said.

About the Rohingya crisis, he stressed the need for quick start of the repatriation process of the forcibly displaced Rohingya people.

Turning to the climate change issue, he said all countries will have to address the climate change issue together and expected that the Bangladesh Prime Minister will continue her leading role in this regard.
