Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said that information technology (IT) and IT enabled services are to be rapidly expanded with a view to developing the IT sector in line with Vision 2021 and Digital Bangladesh.

“In this connection, we have already planned to set up 12 IT parks at the district headquarters of Gopalganj, Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Rangpur and Barisal, Keraniganj in Dhaka, Comilla Sadar (South), Chittagong Port, Ramu in Cox’s Bazaar, Singra in Natore, Companyganj in Sylhet, and the KUET Campus in Khulna,” he said.

The minister made the statement while delivering his speech on the national budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year at Jatiya Sangshad on Thursday.

“Apart from this, we have also taken initiatives to set up seven IT training and incubation centres at different locations across the country, as well as to expand the installation of high speed fiber optical cable connectivity up to the union level,” Muhith added.

The finance minister further said that complementary analogue initiatives were required to reap the full benefits of digitisation. In this regard, the government had already taken measures to establish ICT related institutional frameworks and implement policy reforms.

In addition, Muhith said that a greater number of IT and ICT parks would help generate more domestic and foreign investment.

“You will be happy to learn that Bangladesh ranks 3rd in South Asia in the Digital Adaptation index. I firmly believe that Bangladesh’s integration with IT and ICT will contribute to achieving and maintaining high growth,” he said.
